Die Funktion wird seit dem Jahr 2008 nicht mehr von der IEEE "Arbeitsgruppe 3" (IEEE 802.3, CSMA/CD - Ethernet), sondern von der "Arbeitsgruppe 1" (IEEE 802.1, High Level Interface - Internetworking) verwaltet und technisch unverändert via IEEE 802.1AX definiert.
